Brick has several advantages as a material. It is an aesthetic choice, and in this case, helpful to relate it to the neighborhood around it. Brick is commonly found throughout the neighborhood and most importantly the Jane Addams Hull House, so the incorporation of it gives it a unity and a special connection the neighborhood. Bricks have a high compressive strength, and can take heavy loads. Brick is porous and can release and absorb moisture, to regulate temperature and humidity. Bricks are also really high in sound insulation, something exceptionally important for a library. The placement of the brick wall on the west side where the reading areas are connected to allows for a superior noise insulation experience. Bricks have really good thermal insulation, which can result in significant energy savings. Lastly, brick is the one of the most durable structural building material allowing for a long lifespan.
